HP Gets Touchy with New TouchSmart tx2

Bill Gates says tablet PCs are the future and HP took another step in that direction today with release of the TouchSmart tx2 notebook. The most innovative part of this computer is its touchscreen, and it follows the release of HP's TouchSmart PC earlier this year. Using what is called "capacitive multi-touch technology" HP's tx2 allows you to pinch, rotate, flick, drag, and tap your way through your files and digital media on the notebook screen.

The tx2 weighs around 5 lbs. and comes loaded with Windows Vista, a rechargeable digital ink pen, 12.1-inch diagonal Brightview LED, and a handy remote control that has a cradle in the body of the computer. The computer is available today and sells for $1149.

HP says this is the first convertible pc with multi-touch technology. That's a fancy way of saying that Asus beat them to the multi-touch punch on notebook PCs, but the tx2 is the first tablet notebook to use the technology.

While the tx2 looks like it would be a fun computer to use, I am surprised that HP has yet to include a multi-touch trackpad in its notebook line. A few months ago at a trade show I got the opportunity to try out a Windows machine prototype that had a multi-touch trackpad and it worked wonderfully. So what's the holdup? Apple has grabbed the spotlight with its touch technology on the MacBook Air, iPhone, iPod Touch, and the newer lines of MacBooks. People like the functionality and while it does have a certain cool factor, multi-touch is also very useful. The tx2 is a great first step, but considering that the public has not really embraced the tablet PC concept, HP should take a look at revamping the touchpad.

In the century since the Wright brothers made their giant leap for aviation, flying has become an unremarkable mode of transport, and planes have turned into airborne living rooms. The standard of a good ride today is a personal television screen and in-flight yoga.

Somehow, in the quest for on-board luxury, aircrafts have gotten far less attention than ground transport as culprits in deteriorating air quality and depleted oil sources, even though one pass of a Boeing 747 across the Atlantic uses more gas than 2,500 cars. The environmental impact of planes has been downplayed by our need to travel long distances and our preoccupation with safety.

This problem has not been lost on Bertrand Piccard of Switzerland, who is known for his round-the-world hot air balloon flight in 1999. With the support of the European Space Agency, Piccard is engineering the Solar Impulse, a solar-powered plane that he plans to fly non-stop around the world in 2010. The plane resembles a glider in its design, with wide wings and a slim body.

The plane weighs only about two tons, and will not be able to transport many passengers; but the mission of the project is less about mass transit than it is about demonstrating the potential of renewable energy and sustainable technologies.

The Solar Impulse will capture and store a minimum of eight hours of sunlight per day, which will provide enough power to keep it running through the night. During the day it will fly at approximately 10,000m and at night, will reduce its elevation to 3,000m. The round-the-world flight will be executed by three pilots in tandem.

If Piccard?s demonstration flight proves successful, we may witness standards of sustainability in aviation catching up to standards of comfort.

Green Graphic Design: Step 1, Your Printer and You

Printers and Graphic Designers have long lived in entwined chaos, each attempting to interpret the electronic wizards living within their individual computing systems. Logic suggests that adding environmental concerns to this equation will only serve to exasperate this already malfunctioning system. Fortunately for Green Graphic Designers (and printers), these days are long gone. Gone are the days we send our designs into the ether hoping to receive perfect pieces of printed matter on the other end (…right).

The green path of the future involves getting intimate with your favorite printer.

This was the fundamental conclusion of o2-NYC’s recent event, ‘How to take your Green Graphics to Print.’ O2 invited two of their favorite green graphics gurus to lead an informative discussion to a sizable group of green-hopeful graphic designs and interested others. Eugene Lee, president of the Rolling Press print house, hosted and led the conversation, alongside the esteemed Don Carli, Senior Research Fellow for the Institute of Sustainable Communication and co-producer of last year’s highly successful AIGA Grow Conference.

In the uncharted wilderness that is green design, consider these men to be your guides.

While we wish it were as simple as specifying ‘recycled’ paper and soy inks, we were surprised and delighted to learn that the greenest printers and print technology innovators have moved beyond false promises of simple cure-alls. Instead, each link in the supply chain is coming forward with their own sustainable solutions, from Processless Printing Plates to eliminating the use of VOCs in inks and coatings.

Perhaps most exciting, companies are beginning to analyze this supply chain for sustainability requirements. Standards such as FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) and ISO 9000 and 14000 are taking us in the right direction, encouraging companies to investigate the chain of custody of the materials they select, and to apply principles of continuous improvement to their businesses, ensuring that next year will be greener than the last. However, there is still no single standard or criteria for us to follow, and some of the certifications that do exist are too expensive for small print houses to obtain.

Designers Beware! In a world where ‘Sustainable,’ ‘Green,’ and ‘Eco’ are buzz words, can we trust a printer or materials supply company when they tout their greenness? Of course not! We know better.

What we can do is ask questions and arm ourselves with a list of guidelines to follow. This does mean some personal commitment, not only to educating ourselves about what it means to be green (or what it means to us), but also becoming BFFs with our favorite printers.

Here are a few ideas and questions to get you started.

Guidelines for you:
+ Start the discussion early (before you lay one path on your virtual artboard).
+ Calibrate your equipment to facilitate print accuracy and enable the use of PDFs, rather than printed proofs.
+ Spend time on pre-press – check with your printer to trouble shoot your file set up, and get it right the first time
(you’ll save resources as well as your sanity)
+ Limit your Color Palette (check with your printer what the maximum number of colors for a single run through their press is)
+ Consider where your materials come from and save energy (fuel consumption in transport): is your printer located close to the area of ultimate distribution of your printed matter? Does that special paper you “must” have, come from New Zealand?
+ Stick to standards: paper sizes, standard die-cutting options (your printer will love you for this one)
+ Specify the Greenest paper possible [totally chlorine free (TFC), post industrial recycled content, post consumer recycled content, FSC certified, recycled fabric content, tree-free paper (Kenaf, or Hemp)].

Questions for your printer:
+ Does your printer use Alternative Energy to power their equipment?
+ Do they outsource jobs or complete everything in house? Eliminate energy use in transport.
+ Are they (or their papers) FSC or ISO 14000 certified?
+ Investigate the chain of custody for materials they use (inks, paper, other). Does your printer keep Lifecycle Material Data Sheets for their products?
+ Do they use Process-less printing plates? (This cuts down on those nasty photo sensitive toxics, and replaces them with inert carbon and tap water.)
+ How do they chose their ‘green ink’ (non-toxic, non-metallic, vegetable based, soy based, linseed oil based, other?)
+ Do they choose Inks, Coatings, Press Wash, etc. with low VOC content?
+ Cleanliness of facilities: do they dispose of their ink excess and materials properly? Visit their facilities and see for yourself!

Working together:
+ What are the optimum sizes for you lay out your documents given the printer’s press size?
Talk to your printer about which standard formats and sizes you can specify to cut down on paper waste.
+ Use of Work-Off ink (your printer may be able to mix special colors for you made from excess ink from their previous jobs).
+ Use of standard dies for die-cutting needs.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel. There’s one more added bonus – although your printer may not be eager to have you as his new best friend, he’ll love you for it in the end. What printer wouldn’t love to receive perfect documents that adhere to standards and don’t tax their equipment or necessitate the need for anything ‘custom’ or time consuming? And guess what: It will save you and your client’s money too!!!!

PARANS SUNLIGHT TRANSPORT SYSTEM

When I first saw discovered this amazing technology, I instantly wondered why no one has come up with a sunlight transport device before. The technology has been around for awhile, and the idea is so fabulous, you would think we would all have these in our homes by now. Swedish company Parans has developed a system of rooftop solar panels that collect sunlight and then transport it via fiber optic cables to illuminate light-deprived rooms inside a house. The light emitting luminaries, which hang from the ceiling like lamps, give off a mixture of parallel light beams and ambient light, which changes as the sunlight outside changes, resembling the dappling of sunlight through trees. Hence the name “Bjork” which is Swedish for Birch tree (No it doesn’t mean Icelandic pop star). The idea is that by bringing outdoor natural light inside a house, you will be able to re-establish a connection with the outside environment, even in the absence of windows or skylights. This sounds like a great idea for New Yorkers, with all the tiny lightless apartments out there. I want one! My one window faces a brick wall. NYC Developers take note.

On the subject of simple lighting solutions, here’s something that caught my eye from Mocoloco?s Milan reportage. Its a parasol made from lace cut in the pattern of foliage. There is something about this aesthetic of emulating nature which reminds me of Paran’s Sunlight Transporting system. You could put these parasols underneath your Bjork, and being inside could be exactly the same as siting under a tree. The designer Chris Kabel has this, and a couple others intriguing items (such as this modular fit-to-size table cloth) for sale through Droog design.

Lenovo has unmasked a new range of products that have come equipped with futuristic technologies. The new range of merchandise comprises the Lenovo U330, Lenovo Y430, Lenovo Y330, Lenovo S9, Lenovo S10, Lenovo G230, Lenovo G430 and the Lenovo H series Desktop. Gesture recognition and Lenovo ReadyComm are the new-fangled features that the products are packed with. Besides, these products also include other features such as One-key Rescue and Veriface.

“Our new range of products are priced aggressively. It’s meant for people who prefer products that are lightweight and have a longer battery life. It’s also for those who prefer net browsing on the move,” said Ramprasad L, Vice President, Transactional Consumer Sales, Lenovo India.

The company has also launched a new desktop called H 3000. “We are finding that desktops are catching up a little more than what it used to be earlier. We want to take advantage of this as it’s a good market to tap. And, primarily, you will see that business have started coming out of the B class and C class towns,” he said.

The company’s objective is to ensure that they have a good footprint in at least 400-450 districts across the country. “We are looking at geographical spread, in terms of reaching out to as many end customers as possible. The channel is the medium by which we reach these people. It’s a cumulative all-effort put together in that direction,” he said.

With the launch of the new products, the vendor also has some schemes in store, both for the partners and its customers. “We are running special schemes for the channel to have some kind of upside during diwali, specifically for the month of October. For Lenovo, a channel partner is the key to growth of their business. “We acknowledge our partners. We appreciate the effort that they have put in the Lenovo business. We hope that we will be able to grow our family of partners so that we can tap almost every nook corner of the country,” said Ramprasad.

OLPC 'Give 1 Get 1' Laptop Program Now Available on Amazon

All orders from outside the U.S. will be taken through Amazon's U.K. Web site and will be delivered in the first quarter of next year or later, OLPC said in a statement.

OLPC was started by people at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a goal of creating a low-cost US$100 laptop for school kids in countries where education budgets are less than $20 per child and most kids don't stay in school past the firth grade.

Although its initial laptop, the XO, costs double the target price, the organization has blossomed. OLPC has shipped more than 500,000 XO laptops to children in 31 countries including Afghanistan, Cambodia and Iraq. The organization hopes to deliver 1 million by the end of this year.

There are several ways to participate in the Give 1 Get 1 program.

In Give 1 Get 1, people pay US$399 for two XO laptops, one sent to a child in a developing country and the other sent to the donor. Those who don't want an XO can also simply give as many laptops as they want at $199 each.

iPhone now #1 handset in the world by AdMob’s count

Each month, AdMob, a mobile advertising network, rounds up the data from over 6,000 mobile websites and applications, analyzes it all, and releases their findings in their Mobile Metrics Report. In the September report, AdMob determined that the iPhone had become the #4 handset worldwide by count of ads requested. In the October release, the iPhone has skyrocketed all the way to #1.

Note that these rankings are not directly representative of sales numbers; while AdMob’s ad network is wide enough that these numbers can provide an accurate picture of usage trends, they don’t necessarily prove that one handset is outselling another.

September vs October Worldwide handset rankings:

Within the Top 5, the only major change is the iPhones sudden surge. Below that however, notice the BlackBerry 8100s sudden disappearance from the list - it has shifted down to #11 (not shown in image), sitting just below the BlackBerry 8300. Why might this be? Well, the 8100 is a good half year older than the 8300 - chances are, more 8100s are reaching retirement.

September vs October US handset rankings:

In September, we were a bit surprised to see the iPhone sitting all the way down at #7 in the US while it managed to snag the #4 spot worldwide. In October, the iPhone’s rank seems a bit more well aligned with it’s worldwide status, coming in at #2. iPhone requests have more than doubled, allowing it to knock the KRZR down a notch. The rest of the list moves in relation, though as with the worldwide rankings, we see the BlackBerry 8300 climb as the 8100 sinks.

One thing to note with all of these statistics, however, is that the AdMob advertisements embedded into iPhone applications are counted alongside web site statistics. If these same advertisements are not embedded into applications on all of the other platforms, wouldn’t the numbers be skewed in favor of the iPhone? Even if they were given the same real estate across all platforms, third-party applications are a far more significant part of the iPhone than they are for the vast majority of devices; if you own an iPhone, chances are great that you’ve installed (and regularly use) a handful of applications. Can you really say the same about the KRZR, or the Kyocera K24? Wouldn’t this, too, skew things a bit? I’d be interested in seeing how the results change when limited to data gathered from website ad units.

Other interesting tid bits from the report:

29.5% of the traffic that AdMob saw in October came from a smartphone - 59% of that was from devices running Symbian, while 15% ran the iPhone OS
77.7% of devices AdMob saw in October supported Polyphonic ringtones, down from 79.5% in September
As in September, the Danger Sidekick II is the only Sidekick device to break the Top 20, though it has slipped down from #15 to #16.
62.8% of iPhone requests were from the US.

Motorola announces the 5-megapixel VE66 slider

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you took the Motorola ZN5, made it a slider rather than a candybar phone, and added 3G, you now have an answer: the Motorola VE66. Also, stop thinking about stuff like that, weirdo.

It’s not quite that simple, but it’s pretty close. Like the ZN5, it’s got a QVGA screen (albeit .2″ smaller, at 2.2″), 5 megapixel camera (though with LED flash, rather than Xenon), Stereo Bluetooth, a microSD slot, and WiFi.

While the official announcement fails to mention it, GSMArena reports that there will be two models of the VE66: One with quad-band GSM/EDGE and no 3G (headed to China), and one with UMTS and HSDPA 3G. No word yet on availability beyond “Q4 of 2008″.

Want to see Flash running on the G1? Here’s the video

After yesterdays announcement that Adobe was working on Flash for both Windows Mobile and Android, we mentioned that a brief demonstration of Flash running on the G1 was shown. Don’t believe it? The proof is in the pudding. The delicious streaming video pudding.

While there are a few apparent framerate stutters, this is by all indications a work in progress for Adobe. The element was embedded on a bare page, without any other elements whatsoever - not exactly how they’re generally served. This is presumably to ensure that this not-yet-optimized version of Flash had as many resources as possible for the demo, but hopefully the final version will be able to handle more than standalone SWF files.

AT&T launches the LG Incite

While I try to avoid comparing every touchscreen phone to the iPhone, it’s a bit challenging when they throw them on the same carrier for the exact same price. Coming in at $199 on a two-year contract with AT&T (after $100 dollar rebate), it was all of about a half second before the first “ZOHNOES iPHONE CLONE!!!” remarks started pouring in.

So, what does it bring to the table? Windows 6.1, 3G, aGPS, WiFi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0, and a 3.0″ touchscreen. Oh, and a massive bezel. In the ever crowding touchscreen smartphone market, I fail to see what the draw here would be; any Incite fans want to tell me what I’m missing?

BKLYN DESIGNS 2005

I just got back from the Brooklyn Designs 2005 show in DUMBO, and it was great. The show was relatively small, but there was some nice stuff to see - much of it will be on display at other venues throughout NYC Design week. For the limited amount of work on display I definitely noticed some over-arching trends that popped up throughout the different design collections on display:

1. RECLAIMED WOOD FURNITURE
I saw at least four different companies with furniture created from “reclaimed wood” (wood recycled from demolished buildings, lumber yards, etc). RG Furniture Design, Eric Manigian, SMC Furnishings and Scrapile all featured different variations on this theme. However, while it is clear that Scrapile and RG Furniture Design actually recycle wood which would otherwise be headed for the junk yard, it is not clear to me where SMC Furnishings and Eric Manigian get their wood. Nevertheless, their tables and benches are beautiful. I have a thing for this “wood-in-its-natural-state” stuff - I just can’t get enough of it. I wish / hope that this wood is reclaimed for environmental purposes, but I suspect not.

2. MODULAR STACKABLE STORAGE
Two different designers were showing blocky stackable storage collections. The first was Brave Space, with their ingenious Tetris Shelving system. Even without the Tetris reference, this is very clever. The Tetris thing only makes it so much better.

MMdesign also featured a modular stackable storage system made out of regular old square and rectangular blocks. Okay, so the blocks don’t look like Tetris pieces, but this is still a stylish, space-saving and efficient storage system, and the square blocks are probably actually better for storing stuff than Tetris-shaped blocks. Also, the designer has beautiful press material, which almost (but not quite) makes up for the non Tetrisness of his designs. The best thing about both of these designs are that they are completely modular and customizable, you can buy as many separate blocks as you want, and just re-arrange them whenever you feel like it.

3. INTRICATELY CUT CUSTOM MIRRORS
Two different designers featured mirrors that appeared to be laser-cut into intricate illustrative patterns. The mirrors were stunning, and unfortunately, I did not take pictures of them, because I erroneously assumed I could grab a photo from the designers website. Unfortunately not! However, I did mangage to find a photo of at least one of the designs on Core77’s website. Above is The Design Can’s self-portrait mirror.

SCRAPILE FURNITURE

Recycling junk materials to make new objects is good for the environment, as everyone knows. But in addition to being ecologically sound, recycled designs can be visually stunning as well. Case in point: the Scrapile line of furniture, created by Brooklyn-based designers Carlos Salgado and Bart Bettencourt. The pair has turned their love for discarded wood scraps into innovative, environmentally friendly furniture such as tables, benches, and chairs. Salgado and Bettencourt collect scraps from local woodshops, and piece the together using non-toxic water-soluble glue, thereby preventing wood from piling up in local landfills.

Due to the fabrication process, no two pieces of furniture are the same. Every item is unique and has a sense of history embedded in its materials. My favorite is the rectangular Scrapile Coffee Table (shown on the left).

The Scrapile collection is sold online at Vivavi.

The collection will also be on display at BKLYN DESIGNS this weekend (DUMBO, May 6 - 8, 2005) to kick off NYC Design week.

Biopaver by Joseph Hagerman

Ecologically sound pavers as alternative to impervious surfaces like asphalt and concrete are nothing new. What is novel about Biopaver, by Columbia graduate student Joseph Hagerman, is the addition of a biological core of phytoremediating plants that filters out pollutants from storm water runoff. It represents a synthesis of techonology, ecological process, and design.

Rosemary Laing and the Marvelous

In The Age of the Marvelous, Joy Kenseth defined the word "marvel" as understood several hundred years ago: "anything that lay outside the ordinary, especially when it had the capacity to excite the particular emotional responses of wonder, surprise, astonishment, or admiration." In seeing Laing's work, one can't help but exclaim, "Marvelous!"

Rosemary Laing has covered a patch of rainforest floor with brightly patterned carpeting. The result is discomforting. Are we in nature? Is this nature? Os is it comforting to find something familiar in the wilderness? Are we in a sumptuous salon? This is a place where man belongs and yet doesn't belong. We have made a space for ourselves and yet we feel like occupiers, despoilers of virgin land.

Japan’s oldest Man turns 111

On Sept 19th, several news organisations in Japan reported on Tomoji Tanabe becomming Japan’s oldest man at 111 years old. This coincided with a national holiday called Respect for the Aged Day or Keiro no Hi. The Mayor of Miyakonojo, in Miyazaki (southern Japan) was on hand to congratulate the birthday boy. The secret to Tanabe’s success, “no drinking, smoking and getting up early.”

Japan has long faced a very significant grey population problem, more so than in other Western country. It’s not so much the grey population but the growing number of pensioners as a percentage of the overall population. According to a recennt Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry survey, as of Sept 15 this year, the number of those aged 65 years or older, stood at 26.4 million, an increase of 830,000 from a year earlier. Seniors now account for 18% of the male population and 23.2% of the female population.

Unlike other countries that have looked to immigration as a solution, Japan has stubbornly resisted this with government and public sentiment against any big “social” changes that accompagny a large influx of foreigners. For now, Japan seems intent in pouring money into technology and robotics as possible solution. Less people so lets make smart wheelchairs with built in toilets! (photo from MDN)
